Description of this book from the publisher’s website:
Here is living proof that white and black Christians can live together.
When Spencer Perkins was sixteen years old, he visited his bloodied and swollen father (pastor John Perkins) in jail. Police had beaten the black activist severely, and Spencer never forgot the moment. He couldn’t imagine living in community with a white person after that. But his plans were changed.
Chris Rice grew up in very different circumstances, of “Vermont Yankee stock,” attending an elite Eastern college and looking forward to a career in law and government. But his plans were changed.
Spencer and Chris became not only friends, but yokefellows–partners for more than a decade in the difficult ministry of racial reconciliation. From their own hard-won experience, they show that there is hope for our frightening race problem, that whites and African-Americans can live together in peace.
This revised and expanded edition includes a new introduction, a new afterword, a new study guide, updated resources and a new chapter by Spencer, “Playing the Grace Card.” In compellingly practical detail, Chris and Spencer present their hope, which is boldly and radically Christian. “The cause of racial reconciliation needs yokefellows,” they argue, “. . . not solely for the sake of racial harmony–even though it will lead to that–but for the witness of the gospel.”

Here is what I thought WOW ! WOW! WOW! but, I was not through the 1st page before I found myself wanting to sit down and talk with this fellow because, I believe there are 3 parts to Christianity and that we cannot do 1 and 2 until we do 3. We cannot Love God or our neighbor, regardless of who our neighbor is, until we do number 3 which is Love ourselves the way God Loves us, we have to find value in ourselves. We have to know that God Values us (Loves us) so much that he died for us and not only that, but he would do it again 7X70 times to reconcile us to himself. (See John 3:16) By the way, remember the word Love in John 3:16 is an action verb which required GOD to do something i.e.: fix the relationship between himself and me by making me righteous (without sin) even though I am a sinner. When we begin to understand how much God really values (loves) us then we can begin to see how valuable we are to him and we can also begin to understand just a shadow of what the word Love as Jesus is talking about when he said: \”For God so Loved… (Amazing Love how could it be that you my King would die for me) and … love your neighbors as yourself really means. Then from point 3 of the command of Jesus we can begin to move toward 2 and 1. And I do love the way Mr Perkins laid it out. I was very sad to learn that I will have to wait a little while longer to have that conversation but, I will look him up when I get there after I talk to Jesus and my parents.
